The last time Delhi University's School of Open Learning (SOL) launched new courses was 28 years ago. This year, therefore, is significant for the remote learning programme because of the addition of six new courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. SOL has also adopted the four-year undergraduate programme like the rest of DU colleges
Four new degree courses incorporated in the undergraduate programme include BRA-FIA (bachelor of business administration-financial investment analysis), BMS (bachelor of management studies), BLISC (bachelor in library
and information science) and BA (honours) economics The additions in the postgraduate programme are MBA (master of business administration) and MLISc (master
of library and information science.
DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh also launched the new session for the distance learning school on Monday. He announced that the new courses being launched would be job-oriented and based on professional curricula
"It is a matter of pleasure that in the diamond jubilee year of the School of Open Learning and the centenary year of the university, six new courses are being started under the department of distance and continuing education (DDCE)," said Singh. Keeping in mind the requirements of an emerging India, this year, for the first time in the history of DU, through DDCE, management and other professional courses at both undergrad and postgrad levels have been started"
The VC said these courses would increase the employability of the students many times over and help them to make strategic decisions.
All the new courses being introduced from this session have been approved by the Bureau of Distance
Education and All India Council for Technical Education.
Payal Mago, director of SOL, gave detailed information about the new courses and said the courses were likely to attract more students to open institution. Close to five and a half lakh students take admission in SOL every year.
"Except for MBA, the number of seats in the other five new courses is unlimited. For MBA, we have approved 20,000 seats and the admission will be on the basis of merit. For the new academic session, admission in all SOL courses will be as per the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework -2022 under the National Education Policy of 2020," said Mago. The admission process to SOL, which is to begin within a week, will be completely online at https://sol.du.ac.in.
Along with the new courses, SOL will also start the learning management system soon to help students access all information and reading material.
